Something quite top of the range, think Sony, HP, Dell or Apple MacBook depending on your requirements OS wise.
For a fast operating speed, memory is important!!! Memory at least 2gb realistically (although you may be able to get away with 1gb as long as the graphics is standalone), you should get core2duo, these are the best cpu, screen size (try to get high res, i would say 15.4widescreen, depends on how portable you want the unit to be).
Look around, read reviews...

If you need a fast operating speed, then memory is important. You should get an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with at least a 1.83 ghz processor (if not a 2.0) you should have a minimum of 1GB of RAM. (that's the memory)

A Laptop which has an intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 1 to 2 GB RAM and if you can specify a 7200rpm hard disk (that will make all the difference) As for which brand, try Dell or HP and you won't go far wrong.
