It's been more than the required 25 years since their first hit. To my knowledge it is not a prerequisite to be American. So I'm a little confused by this, considering the impact on music and music history they have made. Is there a reason they have not been inducted yet?

For those that only think they know ABBA-they started with Rock and Roll and moved into Pop. Also, if Patti Smith can be inducted into the Hall of Fame (a woman who admittedly cannot sing), then "talent" has nothing to do with it. For those that are saying it is because they "suck", that is your OPINION, and not a basis for an answer. Thanks!

All these answers about ABBA not be "rock" has nothing to do with being in the R&R HOF!!!
Is Grand Master Flash (2007 Inductee) rock? NO!!!
Is Earth Wind & Fire (2000 Inductee) rock? NO!!!
Are the Bee Gees (1997 Inductee) rock? NO!!!
In my opinion, yes, ABBA should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!!! Someone mentioned Rush in their answer... yes to them to eventhough I'm not a fan. There are many bands/artists not in the Hall of Fame who are deserving. Their time WILL come!!!

ABBA never penetrated the American market. Sure, they conquered Europe and the faux tribute bands that mimic ABBA sell well, but the original band or their recordings never made much of a signal on the American radar screen.

no reason i can think of - it is quite amazing that such amazing songwriters have been overlooked - so much more deserving than The Ronettes, Van Halen (!!!!), The Pretenders, Bonnie Riatt(!!!!!!) and Grandmaster Flash.
Maybe it's the Rock n Roll tag - whereas Abba are Pop - but if this is the case Grandmaster Flash certainly ain't rock n roll!!

somewhat enormously on condition that Alice Cooper hasn't been inducted yet. That oversight is a criminal offense at this element. He has inspired many, many artists and rock genres and remains rocking good.

Because they are very mediocre. And Patti Smith shouldn't be in there either. As far as I'm concerned, most of the greats are already there. Now I suppose they'll "open the doors" for all the "gangsta rappers," thrashers & whatever other inferior acts come down the pike - unless there is a redirection towards actual music again.

The same reason Rush hasn't been inducted. The R&RHoF induct bands based on what they feel is artistic success, not commercial success or "fame", which is kind of ironic, since its the R&RHof FAME.

I have many to suggest as well. How about Johnny Rivers who did so much for rock and roll as well.

Because they're not that great singers. And it's the 21st century. Not many people listen to ABBA.
