i think what you should also try aswell as the answers above is tot ry achiving them into a different folder.
also depend on type of file that you are trying view can also depend on the software that you use to view file.

Starting from the desktop double click the the my computer icon then
double click drive c:
double click documents and settings
choose the the name of the user that you have login with
double click the folder with the login name
now choose the tool option on the menu bar
select folder options
click on view tab
then select the show hidden folders radio batton
then you will see the folder "local settings" folder
open it and
you will find your data there

Ask them to resend it in a different format. I've had this problem a couple of times with zipped files, but when they are resent, as a .sit file, they are fine.

you colud go into my computer, select properties tab, then advanced, then scroll down to hidden files, and tick the box, restart machine and all hidden files (including system files!) should show!
otherwise you may need a passsword as they are hidden system config files!
