Fairy is wrong. Faced with the chop either means they were about to die, or that they were about to lose their jobs. If someone is "for the chop" it means they are not going to be around much longer, and is more usually used in the work-related context. It comes from when people used to be beheaded for crimes.
I am pretty certain you are correct about end roller being cinema related.

The seven colleagues found that they could not enjoy their week end due to the fact that something unexpected had arisen and had compelled them to work during the week end.
The end roller is, I think, the last reel.
