If you're referring to the title of the play ("As Shakespeare says in Hamlet...", italicize it. Underlining was used on old typewriters where you couldn't italicize - you just put a bunch of ----- under the word by going only half a line down.

The same goes for other titles, no matter if it's the New York Times, the song November Rain, the movie Fight Club or anything else.

If you're referring to the character ("Hamlet is convinced that his uncle murdered his father..."), you just use the word without italics, underlining or quotation marks. :)

By the way, all works/sources you mention also need to be listed in your bibliography - but you probably already knew that. :)

Hamlet Quotation

are you referring to Hamlet by William Shakespeare - the play?

then definitely italicize or underline (a major work is underlined or italicized when it is referred to.)

If you're referring to the character ONLY, then no need for anything.

It's best to italicize it so that your essay won't look too messy because underlining or putting quotation marks would make it look like to there is too much going on :)

our english teacher told us this.

no quotes, underlined. also btw when typing its best to italicize rather than underline, it looks sharper and is totally acceptable.
