I was a little disappointed, a little hurt. But as I got older I started realizing that Santa had the same handwriting as my mom. My mom would say she was Santa's helper, but we didn't entirely believe it.
Now that I'm about ten years older from when I found out, it hasn't affected me at all. Now we understand why sometimes we couldn't have Christmas--my parents had little money, so they'd try to get us a few things we wanted, and it made it a nice treat. I think I'll let my children believe in Santa. I think it's a fun tradition. My parents said it was always great to see the look on our faces when we'd open our presents and got what we wanted.

My parents raised me to believe, but I figured it out at a very young age, three or four. My mother slipped up and left the "special" paper Santa had used to wrap the present "he" gave me out in plain sight.
I wasn't really sad about it, since I didn't really understand what a beautiful concept Santa was. I was just confused why adults would bother to play a game like that. (I didn't understand nostalgia yet either.)
I'm ambivalent about whether to tell my kids or not, if I have any. In a way a feel like they would be missing out on something if I didn't, but on the other hand I know I could be setting them up for disappointment they wouldn't understand until years later.

Who says he's not real. My parents have *never* told me there is no Santa (and I'm 37.)
I prefer to think that anytime someone does an unselfish deed for another, then we're acting like Santa. That's the way I'll raise my kids too.

Saint Nicholas was a real man. He is an inspiration to generation after generation with his kindness and generosity. Of course he doesn't live with a bunch of little elves and drive a magical sleigh, but life is sweeter with a bunch of little fictions, like the toothfairy and the Easter Bunny.
Never understood why folks need to debunk these little fantasies as long as they are useful. Even poor people can make a nice Christmas for their children--bake some cookies with your children instead of spending welfare money on cigarettes and booze.

i believed in santa when i was little. i figured it out myself that he wasn't real. i wasn't really disappointed. i was pretty realistic when i was a kid.
i let my children believe in santa, and when they asked me if he was real or not i told them. if they're old enough to question it they're old enough to know. it didn't seem to bother them too much.
