it seems that it is socially unacceptable to be intelligent.. why is this? and what does it say about our generation? (i ask this because i am not sure that this has always been the case)
it seems to me that an intelligent person is very easily and readily ridiculed, even at the large university that i attend.. and it is also something that i have seen my entire life
is it threatening to people? idk about others, but i enjoy hearing others that i know are more intelligent than myself speak
maybe it is pride or jealousy? are we that full of ourselves that we cannot even concede that someone else in this world may have been given a strength that is stronger than what we were given?
thanks for all responses, and smart-*** answers i expect to receive

It's not intelligence that's threatening. It's the expression of it.

there is honestly no longer some thing incorrect with being wise or having a tremendous vocabulary. a lot of young ones those days are as you defined them. in spite of the undeniable fact that, that does no longer recommend you have to be like that, If I were you i'd upward thrust above it. Be wise, use your vocabulary (others may study some thing from you besides by ability of doing so) benefit good issues with it and if human beings have a difficulty with then you definately ignore about them. in case you want my opinion then i'd easily say not in any respect attempt to suppress your intelligence for everyone else's sake. basically be your self, that's all everyone can ask of you.

The situation you are dealing with is just part of the stupidity of YOUTH.
Finish school and give yourself a year or two and you will benefit from your intelligence. Be patience.
Can you imagine how Bill Gates (worth 56 million) and Steve Jobs were treated in school??
People of low intellect and no imagination resort to this sort of behavior. Just ignore them, hold your head up and
KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE. YOUR EDUCATION...
In a few years you will go to a reunion. There you will learn
that they are working in the local grocery, or a lawn service.
Not that we do not need those services but you will be much further ahead in life with your DEGREE AND YOUR INTELLIGENCE.

I don't think people frown upon intelligent people. Its more of how they act....atleast thats what i think. I'm in school for chemical engineering....generally considered a major for the top 20%..... Well from most of the job offers i've seen...if you have a 3.5 or higher...youre not getting the job. Its not that you are too smart.....its you don't probably never went to parties or had any sort of real social life.
My friend just got a job in a chem e profession......he was one of 5 candidates....only one got hte job.....the final test....they took them to a bar and he was the one who could keep up shot for shot.
Even my professors make fun of the students for having over a 3.5.
Anyways, point being, you don't have to be an alcoholic, but you have to be a well rounded person. I don't think anyone really cares how smart you are, its about your personality. Are you an easy going and able to interact with "real" people or are you a book worm who knows nothing about the outside world?
I'm going to say the word "nerd" means a smart person who lives in a bubble.....i think everyone hates nerds.....they're soo annoying. The people that always asks the stupid questions in classes when obvoiusly if the teacher didnt' cover it, no one else is going to know it.
That too, intelligent peopel to me are born with intelligence. There is no way to gain it..learn it....its a trait like your height. Peopel can work hard and know a lot of things, but they aren't smart....intelligence its determined by the time it takes you to learn new material. needed to get that out.
Me personally, i lock myself in my room from sunday - wednesday....get alllll my work done. Wednesday - sunday.... i'm probably still doing homework, but then i'm out at a bar with friends...or hitting the pipe. The nerd in this case is probably spending their saturday night in the library. Thats the person everyone hates.
Would also like to says Grades mean nothing. Thye matter for your first job, but get a year or two of experience and you can reapply for a job you prefer more. The only situation where they actually matter is for grad school. But my friend graduated chemistry with a 2.1....worked for 5 years...After a good letter of recommendation and getting a 4.0 in 2 classses...he's going for his phd.

Yes you speak the truth and it is worse among females. Jealousy runs rampant. They claw the pretty ones to bit. As for intelligence, Everyone is spiteful toward the smarter ones, even here on Answers!!! It all boils down to jealousy and envy.
But people would rather pull you down than try to raise themselves up because it's easier to do!!!

people don't being made to be feel stupid, especially if they feel they are smart, some smart people may not have the best social skills either and can make people feel stupid without knowing it.
some people shut them down straight away, "oh hes smart but he can;t do this" kind of thing so they feel better.
a lot of out of shape people dont like people who look fit for the same reason and may mock them.
All about carving your own reality where you can feel like you are somehow one of the good ones and your strengths are more noble. this also helps when you feel like you could achieve more and haven't.

It is not intelligence that is being frowed upon. It is the boasting or the over enthusiasm to show it off. One may be doing that without him/her realising.
