It's supposed to be his subconscious. I think they chose it because in real life a rabbit is very non-threatening but not only have they made it look really scary it also tells Donnie lots of scary stuff. Probably representing the dual nature of our inner selves. No matter how nice and fluffy we seem we've all got a little bit of darkness inside.

I was lucky enough to go to the London premiere of Donnie Darko a few years ago and Richard Kelly the director was there talking about the film.

I've always thought that Frank is an homage to Harvey - the 6 ft tall white imaginary rabbit in the film starring James Stewart - superb film, I would diefinitely recommend it.

I doubt it has much to do with Alice in Wonderland, it's closer to things like Peter Pan and Richard Kelly made references to ET in the film too (hoodies and bikes etc).

The movie was psychology based, and for everyone who watched it, there were different meanings, intended to be that way.
I found the way it was set to pave the way for new genres of that type of movie, which challenged religion, science, mental health, paranoia and a lot more.
It really was one of the best movies I have seen in quite a long time.
