I Love NY!!!

I'd like to find out more about working in the US... I'd love to go there for a year or two - I'm a professional. Are there any websites that deal in this??

thanks,

P

I looked into this sometime ago.

what you need is a working visa, this will involve you needing a sponsor or having close family already living there.

go to the american embassy website, all information on immigration is on there.

that is the only way you can get in, I could not find a company wanting to sponsor me as you are then their responsibility to a degree, and I do not have any family over there. hance me still being in Hampshire!!

A green card is something you have to earn over there, that then means you are an american citizen and can vote etc once have one of these.

A few people have said that a green card means you are a citizen of the US... it doesn't. A green card is a permanent residents card and entitles you to live and work (with a S/S number) in the US for an indefinite time. Citizenship comes only after a period of time (eg 7 years) and is the same as permanent residence except you gain the right to vote.
You can get in on various business visas, or by investing 1,000,000 USD in a part of the country (500,000 USD in less affluent areas) and this entitles you to live and work in the US for up to 6 years. During this time, you can apply for a green card, and likely be accepted. All in all, it's a very lengthy process and a decent immigration lawyer is a must!! Hope some of this helps, all the best with it

If you only want to go there for a year, try to go with Bunac (you can check their website here: www.bunac.org/usa). They are specialised in finding working placement and will facilitate all the paper work for you. However, this is more for a working experience.
Now, if you got the intention to work there for longer, or for an unknown period of time, you indeed need a green card. If you are a UK citizen, I dont think you can enter the 'lottery' that takes place every year (between October and December. Check the Department of State website). Your best chance then is to find a job here with a US firm and then move your way up in order to sollicitate a position in their US offices...
You can also invest $1 million there...if you got some savings of course!
And as someone rightly said, having a green card doesn't make you an American citizen...

I love New York too. My son worked in USA for a year but he was sent there by his employer, Goldman Sachs. (PS: He earned enough in a year to put down a hefty deposit on a house in London). A mate of mine works there because he is engaged to a US citizen in Boston (I think he will soon be due for naturalisation) (right word? Anyway, USA citizenship). Another mate of mine also got the same because he met an American woman on a kibbutz in Israel, made her pregnant, flew to USA to reunite with her, and he now has dual citizenship. He has married (and divorced) three American women and has 6 children, all living in USA. Other less drastic alternative is to do what I did years ago and work for 12 weeks in a summer camp.

You only get a small amount of holiday and compared to England the wages don't match up. If you are keen, go and talk to the embassy in London

A professional what? A ultrasound tech moved to the UK from here(Oregon) to work. So if your medical that shouldn't be a problem other than testing.

if you're a professional, in order to get a working visa like H1-B, your employeer needs to show you have skills that are in demand...

so look for jobs on Monster.Com that need your skills, training or knowledge and see if they will get you a working visa.

the alternative is to marry in, but even then you'd have to have good skills ... in order ti get a working visa or a green card.

good luck

Philip

pierce brosnan is now an offical citizen of the us and he was born in the uk perhaps researching how he got his card or how immigrants get their cards into different countries may prove a benefit to you.
