That's is all I'm given. I have to write an essay, either factual or fictional, inspired by the topic 'Helping Hands'. I'm not asking anyone to actually WRITE the essay for me, but does anyone have anysuggestions as to what I should write on?

thanks to everybody who offered their helping hand *pun intended*. However all these suggestion are for a factual essay. What about suggestions for a simple short story?

I'm in an area of America that was wiped out by hurricane Katrina, there are so many volunteers who have come from all over America to help out, and things are really getting better quickly. And people keep coming! And companies give and give!!! It is amazing!
Those are helping hands. What do you think?

Your question says essay, hence no short story ideas but you could begin your essay with a short story like the "Monkey's Paw" in which the father wished for money and got it but through an insurance claim because his son died; then his wife wished her son alive again and of course the son returned as a walking mutilated corpse. If you want the title to be ironic, perhaps helping hands could turn into too many "hands" spoil the broth. Or, consider a visual of helping hands but rather than being metonomy, make it real. For example fifty pairs of hands holding up a wall.

What about writing a short story about an everyday person doing something to help others out? You could make the person a superhero whose hands have "magical" powers, or the person could be someone who works in the medical field, something like that. I think that writing about a superhero would be easier because you don't really have to worry about factual errors like you would if you were dealing with someone/a profession that is "real."
Good Luck!

I read all of what everyone wrote and there are some good ideas here for you to choose from. I keep thinking though about NURSES....They go back a long way!!! Florence Nightingale?
You could write a story about a nurse who worked for 30 years and then she winds up in a hospital bed and for the first time in her life she needs to be gracious and accept the helping hands of others especially her co-workers.
You could describe the process she goes through to ask for what she needs from others etc..

A story about a runaway, who is offered financial help and advice about life from a Viet Nam Vet, who lost his hands during the war. Then the title Helping Hands would have a touch of irony.

thats so easy i could do you essay in 3 min! talk about helping hands, to talk about it, what do hands do for you? they do everything for you scratch you in the back when it itches, wipe your tear when you cry, feed you so you dont starve to death if you want to make it a lil funny you can say it can even wipe your hiney lol! then for something more serious you can say that helping hands are verry important thats what team work is all about, theres a lot of things in life that we cant do if you dont have some help, even the president has a helping hand. then i dont know you could say it fun to have help and that its also verry important not to take everything for granted, and give some help back, pass it foward..... and at the end you could say that its ok to have help but we have to try to do it on our own first, you know what i mean, show ppl to be independant from time to time. i hope it helped take care and good luck

"Helping Hands"
That was the name of the company in the British comedy classic, "Carry On Regardless". You could do an essay on this film and on the contribution that the carry on genre made to British entertainment.
Good luck with your essay.

try to think of someone or something that helps you or the people arond you on a regular basis. for example your mum. now im not suggesting that you write about your mother but just think along those lines you know and it will probably be easier writing about something a bit closer to home than a organization that just helps people in general. yeah i think someone specific would be better.

"What about suggestions for a simple short story?"
Just write about your experience here. It should make a nice short story.
