The Hobbit took place BEFORE the LOTR series; back when Bilbo was a lot younger. in the movie the book that bilbo was writing was about his adventures as a youth (Which would have been the story of "The Hobbit". During that adventure Bilbo found the ring (that he later left for Frodo in the beginning of LOTR) in a cave during his "Hobbit" adventure and wore the ring so Gollum could not see him while he escaped from the tunnel.
