Why cant hampsters come to australia?

How come you cant buy hampsters in australia, i have looked every where thats legal and i cant find them can any one help?

Because Australia has a shocking history of introduced animals wreaking havoc on the environment! Rabbits, Cane Toads, Foxes....... There are lots of interesting pets available in Australia. Because of Australia's strict laws on the import and export of animals hamsters have been banned from sale.
The government is trying to stop a plague of hamsters like the plague of rabbits the happened fifty or sixty years ago when some were released into the wild years before. They even tried to wipe out all the rabbits by introducing myxamatosis but this did not work.

Australia do not allow what is called pocket animal's eg hamsters,mice,even birds.It has to do with bringing disease in.I want to bring my parrot home when i come but as yet I'm not allowed,When i rang customs they said the laws maybe changing to bring birds in but I'm not sure about hamsters.I found a phone # to call on the Australian customs website
