As fossil fuel are getting costly & scares, Electric car is sure to come. It has tremendus commercial future, particularly in urban areas. Before it comes to other countries our technocrats should take the lead so that we do not chase others technology, rather we force to use our technology! We have large number of establishments who can work on this subject. we need to understand the potential of electrical vehicle and convince leaders to take risk which is worth.
Finance and dedicated persons are required to pursue these vehicles

It's amazing to me how many people are stuck in the past on this topic, and don't realize that electric cars have advanced considerably in the last 30 years.

New li-ion battery designs are not toxic, have very long lifespans, and are fully recyclable.

EV operating cost, for electricity, is very low - as low as 1 cent per mile. If solar cells are used, the cost per mile could be zero. No other alt-fuel option comes close to this. EVs also have very low maintenence costs, since electric motors have only one moving part.

Also, electric vehicles pollute much less than other options, even when powerplants burn dirty fuel. This is the case because battery EVs are much more efficient than both internal combustion engines and fuel cells. Power plants also burn fuel much more efficiently than your gas car does. Greater efficiency equals more miles on less fuel, which equals less pollution per mile (much less.) Plus they can only get cleaner as the electric grid gets cleaner. This will never be true of gasoline.

Right now electric cars need batteries, which are heavy, toxic and don't last that long. With the population of India, there is going to be a lot of solid pollution as the batteries enter the land fill and even from recycling them (just as the Japanese suffering from posioning from recycling batteries).

What India needs to look at is hydrogen fuel cells. You can get hydrogen from sea water (more practical using sea water rather than fresh water) using electricity from solar panels. The hydrogen passes through platnium plates and combines with oxygen to create electricity. This added step to bypass batteries cuts down on the waste. There is no moving parts in the fuel cell itself or stuff to throw away. Any wreck would be recycled. The "pollution" is pure water. Since it's basically an electric vehical, it would create almost no noise (around as much noise as a person walking).

Electric car can bring a change but for the input of the car we have to burn a fossil fuel in a power plant. So for India it is better to go for an alternate fuel vehicle like jatropha, ethanol, LPG.. etc. And also the electric vehicle cannot afford heavy loads.
