First it was the USA turning their clocks forward. Now Our goverment wants to abolish the 'Stand by' button from all electicals. So we won't be able to record when away/out. Work that one out Blair/Brown!

I feel I do my bit as it is, I recycle as much as I can, I switch the TV off fully before I go to bed, I don't leave lights on, wash on the lower cycles. But I object to being forced into doing more just to suit the government. I really don't think the UK is a big polluter compaired to other countries.

I think its a great idea. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, it will save people a lot of money on their electricity bills.

With the likes of Virgins TV on demand service becoming more and more common in housholds, recording off TV is becoming a thing of the past anyway. I predict that in10 years time nobody will need a recorder.

MellowMan - Don't see where anybody called you a killjoy mate. Cheer up! Good for you on the energy efficiency front by the way.

Fact is, good idea or not, the government probably haven't thought it through, since their only playing at being green to try and get the support of floating voters

Of course you'll be able to record. You'll just leave the PVR/Video/Sky+ Box in full power mode all of the time, rather than putting it into Stand By mode - using even more electricity in the process.

In fact, you'll leave it in full power mode all of the time as it will take a good while to boot up from a cold start.

I've still to have someone show me that running a Cathode Ray Tube takes only 50% more power than running a little red light and infra-red receiver???

So whats your question? Seems you are more interested in TV than living. Pollution and its effects can kill through the resulting impact of global warming etc. However, I would doubt if not using a standby button would have much impact.

What is sad now it has come to my attention and for others who are not following the pipe piper of man-made global warming.
That the who rang out the first cry of it is now rethinking it.
NYT is telling Gore to tone it down.

I am all in favor of being a better steward and conservative but don't lie to me to make me do it.

I agree with you. Humans are not causing Global warming. It's a natural thing. Which is why we have ice ages and such. Really cow farts are hurting the environment more then we are.
