His answer sounds incriminating.
I think you were out of line to ask him, unless you were hitting on him, in which case you should have given him a clue as to why you were asking.
Maybe if you had said "are you gay? because I think you're really hot, and last night I had a dream that you were f****ng me in the ***, (or in the mo***), and when I woke up I was wet all over".
Then he probably would have given you a more definite answer and you wouldn't have to be asking us and wondering, and maybe missing out.
