Statistically, what are the chances of being caught downloading movies, music and software from the internet?

If I'm behind a French router with an IP address I get from DHCP and I'm running a sygate pro firewall what are the chances of my getting caught and what are the fines?

Are fines universal or specific to the region/material downloaded?

Well, for starters, firewalls don't matter in this case. In the case of a torrent file of, say PGA Tour 2007, if you were to be caught, the pursuer would contact your ISP directly through a letter with your IP address attached. Usually it would say something like, "Someone under your services has been downloading illegally blah blah blah." They most often do not specifically contact you (unless you are someone like isohunt.com or thepiratebay.com). Your ISP then decides what to do with you. For what they would do to you, you would need to check through your ISP's contract to find out. Usually, it's just a warning letter, and then after a second time it's disconnection and a threat that they are now going to forward your info to the authorities.

The chances of being caught are actually quite high if you don't know what you're doing. It actually takes some skill torrenting. Some places (EA Games for example) will place bait-torrents. If you know what to look for, you know how to avoid them.

There are several ways around this of course. You can go through a proxy server. Most of them are free, but can be very slow. You can use what's called Anonymous P2P. You should look up this kind of thing on a torrent site. You CANNOT be nailed just for visiting the site. It's only when you download something from the site. Go to some place like bittorrent.com, or isohunt.com, and find out more info about anonymity. They usually have some very good suggestions.

As far as statistics go, the RIAA has filed thousands of lawsuits out of the millions, upon millions of illegal file sharers.
