The number of protons determines the type of atom and the atomic number of the atom. The protons and neutrons together make the atomic weight.

Yes, the proton does determine what the element is. Protons do indicate the atomic number and it's somewhat related to the atomic mass(protons + neutrons). Electrons are free to move, negatively charged, and are the main causes of a chemical bond.

the protons partly determine what an element is. neutrons and electrons and electronic configuration all cause the characteristics of each individual element.

the number of protons indicates its atomic number which also indicate number of electrons. the number of protons+ neutrons=mass number
