I would start soon with my first son I waited until he was 18 months and it look a couple nights of him crying himself to sleep then he just went without a problem after that, make sure you stick to it once you start or they'll think if they cry you'll come get them every time. With my second son I started as soon as he came home from the hospital I would give him his bottle but him in bed and turn on a music box or something we have one that hooks on the side of the bed and lights up hes just turned 1 and has problem being laid in his own bed by himself every night. Good Luck

Hi!
In my view, it depends on what you want to do. At around 1-month-old, many babies can actually go to sleep be on their own if full, tired and satisfied. Then you can simply try to put the baby in his crib and go to another room. It might work.

There are also plenty of other things you can do early, like starting to put your baby down in the bed just as he/she is drifting to sleep. You can rock his crib. Give him a small (safe) stuffed animal, that smells from you etc.

What you should not do in my opinion is to try any kind of cry it out method early (or ever...).

We waited 5years with our oldest son, 10 months with our daughter and 2 months with our youngest son to slowly teach him to sleep better. Guess who learned the fastest... ;-D

Good luck!

As soon as they get home from the hospital, they should be sleeping on their own. I would just put my babies down after their feedings and they would sleep. I never rocked my kids to sleep or tiptoed around. As they got older, but still in a crib, I put them down, awake of course, and let them go to sleep on their own. I also would put a few safe toys and books in the crib so they could play for a little while if they weren't ready to sleep right away.

It is not recommended to start controlled crying prior to 6mo, however you could start from birth by putting your baby to sleep on her own & patting her or singing until she falls asleep. It's not advisable to put her in her cot if she has already fallen asleep as she will wake up disorientated. Best to feed her prior to bedtime so that when you put her down she is tired but not asleep. If she does feed just prior to bed then put her in her cot just prior to her falling to sleep. Stay & settle her while she is in her cot til she falls asleep. From 6months on you could let her have a cry. Good luck it worked for me this way after disaster with my first 2 children. My 3rd sleeps on his own & has from birth (with a little help).
