WWF was the World Wrestling Federation, but a couple years ago when WCW and ECW went under, got bought out or whatever) the World Wildlife Foundation took the now WWE to court and some how earned the rights to the abbreviation WWF, so the old WWF had to find a new logo... lucky for them one of there biggest advertising campaigns as far as memorablia and t-shirts was there GET THE "F" OUT merchandise, meaning they were changing to the World Wrestling Entertainment... And as for the logo, all the did was add a line at the bottom of the WWF logo... wrestling is actually a very crazy business...every tag team, wrestler, match, all the names and ideas of for matches and storylines, are bought and patented by the owners of the companys, one example is WWE owns the rights to the names bad *** billy gunn, and road dogg jesse james, they were the NEW AGE OUTLAWS (also owned by WWE) so when they went to TNA who is not in any way associated with WWE they were not aloud to used those names or the tag team name... they could pay WWE a lot of money for the rights, but unless ur someone like Hulk Hogan, or the NWO theres no point...
So basically when WWE was WWF they were illegally using the world wildlife foundations company name, and unless they worked out a crazy financial agreement, or partnership agreement one of them had to change...

[edit] World Wrestling Entertainment
A 2000 lawsuit from the World Wildlife Fund (also WWF) was settled in 2002, when on May 6, 2002, the company changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., or WWE. This forced the company to issue new licensed merchandise such as apparel, action figures, video games, and DVDs with the new WWE logo. For a short while, WWE had a slogan: Get the "F" out.

The WWF (World Wrestling Federation) was the former name of the WWE. However, the World Wildlife Fund (aka: WWF) a lobby group dedicated to protecting nature along with saving endangered species of animals, sued Titan Sports claiming they had the rights to the WWF name first.
Titan lost and chose the name WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)

Well, it's about the branding. WWF (the wrestling company) got in a squabble with WW (World Wildlife Fund), and they had this courtroom drama, and WWF (wrestling company) lost (because prior to the change to WWF they were initially known as WWWF (World Wide Wrestling Federation), so the environmentalist group had the sole right to use the acronym. Even in the web.

It's the same thing. WWF (old) WWE=WCW+WWF
World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. WWE's business focus is on professional wrestling. It is currently the largest professional wrestling promotion in the world, and holds an extensive library of videos representing a significant portion of the visual history of professional wrestling. The promotion previously existed as the Capitol Wrestling Corporation, which promoted under the banner of the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), and later the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). WWE promotes under three brands; RAW, SmackDown! and ECW. WWE is also home to three of the eight internationally recognized world heavyweight titles.
