That is a myth... every Republic president in the past 50 years has actually increased the size of government 10 fold over that of their Democratic counterpart.

The reason they try to make us believe this is due to de-regulation. They want everyone to believe deregulation results in smaller governmental control. This is true but only for the LARGEST corporation that gain from it...

Some of the best presidents throughout history have been Republicans.
Some of the worst (Carter, Johnson, et cetera) have been Democrats.

So the answer to your question is no. There HAVE been some amazing Republican presidents. Theodore Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Dwight Eisenhower, Nixon was until Watergate, Abraham Lincoln, Taft was a good yet underrated president, Mckinley was a good president, the list goes on and on. And actually, former President Bush WAS a good president, for the most part.

History tends to view presidents kinder than their current constituents do.

Anyway, the real reason that Republicans believe in less government is because they believe in capitalism. They believe that ALL people can make something of themselves if they try.

Personally, I believe that both parties are hopelessly idealistic.

Democrats seem to believe that the government can always be honest (even when they themselves are not), that people NEVER take advantage of the programs placed in effect by FDR and his New Deal (this is where welfare comes from), and that other countries won't betray us no matter what.

Republicans seem to believe that if the government doesn't help people, they'll figure out how to help themselves.

BOTH parties are wrong; the truth lies somewhere between. But unfortunately, I don't think there will EVER be a viable third-party candidate, and I also don't think that the government will ever be reformed so as to operate more efficiently.

But I don't know why I'm wasting my time with all this. I think you were just trying to insult Republicans, and get people to agree with you. It's THIS behavior, like yours, that's tearing our country apart.

Oh if only Republicans actually believed in less government!

In reality both parties believe in power and spending as much and more money as they can, and building as big an empire as they can. They just disagree on what to spend that money on.

But is you want the reasoning behind why governments should be kept as small as possible (as the founding fathers wanted). Think of it this way. You see someone in need of some shoes. You buy some shoes and give them the shoes 100% goes to that. Now you ask the government to do that. Between all the people that are going to take a piece of the money to pay for people's jobs, paperwork you name it, the poor guy will be luck to get one shoe from your money.

Governments are needed, but they are always going to be inefficient, so anytime you can do something without them you are better off.

The Republicans are a joke just like the Democrats!! The Democrats invented earmarks the Republicans have just become better at earmarking.

Considering who the Republican elite and the media are choosing for the Republican primaries I'll be voting third party and no one can talk me out of it!

Republicans may talk of less gov't but only Ronald Reagan cut the gov't.

They "say" they believe in less government but they do an entirely different thing.

A great symbol of GOP failure is the proliferation of earmarked spending. In 1994 there were 1,500 such projects stuffed into Democratic spending bills, and Republicans called this a fiscal disgrace. This year (2006) Republicans approved closer to 15,000 earmarks at a cost of more than $10 billion. The current leadership defended this earmarking even after such embarrassments as the Alaska Bridge to Nowhere were exposed.

Not to mention the huge bureacratic expansion known as the Dept of Homeland Security...sorry but fiscal conservatism is a thing of the past.

While Republicans profess to believe in less government, they actually promote more government. During the past six years the government and the budget have grown by a staggering amount. The Republicans want less government where it is beneficial to the people, but more government where it is beneficial to the corporations. During this administration there has been unprecedented growth in government. And if you look at the Iraq occupation, the response to Katrina, and Walter Reed Hospital you begin to grasp the level of incompetence within this administration.

no. republicans these days think just the opposite. Real conservatives(libertarians) believe government should be limited so that they are not intrusive and so we don't live in a police state or nanny state. Who the hell wants that? We also don't want the federal government spying on us and police searching us without a warrant and IRS raids because you forgot a receipt on your taxes....etc.

Republicans believes in religion as more powerful than the government that is why they are conservatives. Thus, they are relying must on the Church to guide the people rather than doing good in public office.
