Would you be interested in a whole series? I highly recommend Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon books. They are about an Israeli assasin who is also a world famous art restorer. When reading them, you will learn so much about the whole situation in the middle East - starting with the second World War and the Nazi "Final Solution". Start with The Kill Artist and work your way forward to The Messenger - the newest and the best. Mr. Silva's prose is brilliant, his research is excellent and the character of Gabriel Allon is one of the best I have ever come across. Enjoy. C.

I'm not sure what you mean by "controversial." They mystery genre is generally considered to be the one most likely to present a stable world in which all questions can be answered by logic, and order always is restored with the solution to the crime. If you want mysteries that raised a few eyebrows and unearthed a few skeletons, try anything by Raymond Chandler.

da vinci code. the movie and book were so controversial, some countries thought of banning them.
it's about a speaker who lectures about symbols and their histories. he comes across a murder of an old man, which is rumored to be part of a cult. with the help of a french lady, they unfold the mystery and clues in discovering the bloodline of jesus christ.

I suggest you read Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye by Horace McCoy. It's more noir than mystery, but hey, it gets the job done.
From Serpent's Tail's website:
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye is a kind of success story. A Phi Beta Kappa scholar succeds in turning himself into a vicious and completely immoral criminal - a man whose contempt for law, order, and human life drives him relentlessly into a career of unrelieved evil. He escapes from a chain gang to join a pack of gangsters and a millionaire’s daughter falls in love with him, but eventually his past overtakes him. Kiss Tomorrrow Goodbye is McCoy’s most ambitious work and the basis for one of the great gangster movies, starring James Cagney.

Try James Ellroy's early novels up to L.A. Confidential. Especially The Black Dahlia, and Killer on the Road (the creepiest novel I have EVER read). Enjoy!!

"The DaVinci Code" meets that description. If you are heavily into action, it's a good one.
