I have a SD Card that has a hardware fault. Since I have pictures on it, I have been searching for ways to get to the data. The only thing that I have found are sites on the net that charge US$200+ for recovery. Is there an alternate way to do this at home for less?

there is no way u could do a recovery on ur own at home. Cuz SD's are mainly circuits and once it is damaged it is extremely dificult to recover it by urself.

EDIT*
Shes talking about an SD CARD here not an Harddisk...good god!

My external drive failed last month without warning. I immediately bought Iolo's "Search and Recover 4" for about $50 and it was a waste of money. I bought it because the box specifically said that it, "even recovers from malfunctioning, damaged, formatted, and repartitioned drives and devices!" It didn't even find a single file on the dead drive!

Luckily I remembered that I saw an article in the 11/2006 "Maximum PC" magazine that talked about "must have" utilities. It listed a program called "File Scavenger" from www.quetek.com for $50. I didn't have a backup so I sprung for the second program. Unlike the Iolo program, this one WORKED! Except for four photos, I recovered everything on my broken 160 GB drive.

File recovery-
Recuva (pronounced "recover") is a freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses!
