There are 2 common ways to test for A/C leaks. One is to use a device called a sniffer. It is an expensive and sensitive electronic device used for sensing the refridgerant. The most common way, however is with UV dye. The system gets a little dye added to it and then is checked over with a UV style light. If there is a leak, the dye glows.

It's usually a sniffer device that detect any freon that may be leaking. These will detect even the smallest leakes. They check every fitting to see which one is bad.

The last time I had mine serviced, they pumped out all the old Freon, put the thing under vacuum, and let it sit for a while to see what would happen. Nothing did, so they put in some compressor oil (it seals the bearings) and filled it with new Freon. I paid the guy $250 and went on my way.
