Its called a membrane sweep and it involves the midwife or doc putting two fingers into the cervix and moving them around in a circular motion. It's not supposed to rupture the membrane straight away, just loosen things up. Most women go into labour naturally within 48 hours of havng ths done.
Good luck with the new baby.

ok i know what this is as i have had it done the real term is called a sweep of the membrance to see if they can get labor started Membrane sweeping is done by a midwife or doctor. While internally examining you, he or she will simply "sweep" a finger around the neck of the womb (cervix). The aim is to separate the membranes around the baby from your cervix. This releases hormones called prostaglandins which may kick-start your labour hope this helps i have 4 kids and pregnant with twins so i know quite a lot about pregnancy and child birth lol

Its a matter of cleaning out the entrance to the uterus. The doctor basically scrapes the cervix a little, very little to no pain but for some reason this induces many women..

never heard it called that before, but sounds like a membrane sweep. Basically the midwife will put a finger up the cervix, to stretch it slightly, and then sweep around, this dislodges the membranes that attach the uterus to the cervix, I had this done, it is uncomfortable but not painful, and unlike me who it didnt work for, this can be successful to start labour. Good luck to you and your lady xxx

Mid wife does exactly what it says to your cervix and it works,my son arrived 10 hrs later, she was the best midwife I ever had, so do as she says and your baby will be here pronto.

I think it is meant to be stretching the cervix and scraping the amniotic membrane to pierce it and release the amniotic fluid to induce labour.

Basically the doctor will slide there finger inside her and push into her cervix. This stimulates the muscles to start contractions and progress the labor

They will just basically sweep the membranes on her cervix and twiddle about to make them rupture, this will hopefully start labour. Tell her not to worry its not painful maybe just a little uncomfortable. Good luck!
