just to add to checking your local laws. Check into what you are getting into. Piranhas get a viciously bad rap most of the time. True they are aggressive toward one another but they are also very shy member of tetra family. Yes they are just big ole tetras. They do better in schools in larger tanks. When they get cramped up(and that can be as little as 3 or 4 in a 30 gallon tank depending on the species) They start to lash out at each other when they become sexually mature. Often leaving you with one pale stressed out loner. It is often at this time that I have seen people become bored with these fish and try and find ways of getting rid of them.(which you really want to find out if they are legal in your state because that can throw a wrench in the works)
So really buyer beware!

Piranhas are legal to own in some Northern states. Check your state game and fish laws BEFORE you buy one.

Yes you can buy them in the US. Just go to your LFS and ask. Some states they are illegal, like in colorado, but i went to my LFS and saw 5 of them in one of their tanks.

Yeah, kind of like dope. Readily available but illegal in a lot of places.

yea my roomate used to have one... he bought it off of someone at college but i think they originally got it at the fish store
