Technically it is a type of music, emo is short for emotional. It's those bands like My chemical romance and stuff.
But when people use it at school they mean someone who wears lots of black and cuts their wrists.
If you tell someone who is definately an emo (ie. you can see all the cuts on their wrists) and you tell them they're emo they'll normally say that they're not an emo and give you the techincal meaning of it. If you think someone is emo but are not entirely sure and you yell "EMO" out to them and then they say they aren't and then give you the technical meaning then there's a 99% chance they are emo. Just thought you might want to know that.

well emo...EMOTIONAL rite? the typical emo wears black skinny jeans with black converse shoes with a 'emo' haircut and thick rimmed square glasses... they're not goths bcos they are pretty much always sad and they're pretty quiet but they do have gothic features eg wearing black clothes mascara and queer make-up stuff, they're pretty much hate life and slit their wrists and r lyk 'aww poor, me my lyf sucks let's slit my wrists so i can feel pain and sorrow' i no som emo people and its sad 2 say they're exactly like that the clothes and everything!!! its weird!!! so anyway there's this song called "emo kid" and it basically describes the things emo people do. try downloading this song I love it!!! its rather funny... here are the lyrics so u can get the general idea of a typical emo, the songs really catchy 2!!! hope this helps!!!

When you dress in tight blue jeans, wear sweatshirts, grow your hair long enough that it covers one of your eyes, listen to My Chemical Romance, and cry a lot, you're emo.

Basically it just means anything emotional, music, lyrics, even people describe themselves as being emo sometimes

lol...to me...emo is just a "hair-cut".
I dont mean to knock it but this is just my opinion.
if you know of the bands like AFI or Fallout Boy.....
to me thats Emo.
wearing girls pants, with that certain hairstyle, and kind of a punk look to them but not punk of course.
punk is a whole nother explaination.

emo can refer to music, lifestyle, and even people themselves. when it is refer-ed to people, that person can be described as a low self esteem woman (whether they have male genitalia or not) that feel everything in life is there to bring them down.
