Of course I would suggest checking out Taipei as you'll never run out of things to do:

See Taipei 101 - still the tallest in the world. Go at about 5pm - this way you'll get to see the day view, sun set and night view (value for money)!

Check out the night-markets - Shih-Ling is the biggest, Rao-He has plenty of snacks and Tong-Hua is good as it's located a 10min walk from 101 (good to visit after seeing 101). I suggest trying water melon juice or pearl milk tea, you could try eating shui-jian bao (delicious steamed dumplings)!

If you're interested in shopping then you can visit Zhong-Xiao Dong-Lu (get off the MRT at Zhong-Xiao Fu-Xing station), you can check out the various stores and 3 sogo department stores. Again, around 101 there are many department stores - you could check them out from morning til 5pm, then go to 101.

If you're looking for bargains, go to Taipei main station, go underground and visit Taipei City Mall, there are thousands of bargains to be had (great place for cheap souvenirs)!

If you're into art/museaums - don't forget the Nat museaum (Gu-Gong Bo-Wu-Yuan) it has the largets collection of Chinese artefacts outside of China (or perhaps the world)?

If you're going to stay for longer than a few days:

Try getting to Ali-Shan, I recommend taking the old traditional train to get there. The views are magnificent!

Taroko Gourge at Hua-Lien was voted as being one of the most beautiful places on Earth! If you go there you'll know why!

May in Taiwan is a special month as during this time you can see the fire flies (if you like that kind of thing) You can see them at Yi-Lan, not too far out of Taipei, it also has one of the world's only two cold springs (not actually cold - but very re-freshing, quite warm and good for your health). You could also see them at certain places on Ali-Shan and Ken-ding. Oh, if you want to visit beautiful tropical beaches then you should go to the very southern most tip of Taiwan - Ken-Ding, it actually lies in the tropic of Cancer and is warm all year around - you can do water sports and many other activities there!

Check my 360 blog for photos of Taiwan, any other questions - you can email me!

Just in case I've missed anything here's a link to Taiwan's official tourist board:

There is so much to see, but I think it might be better to send you a couple of Taiwan sites for you to look at. After seeing them, you may get a better idea of what you want. Then you can post and ask some more specific questions.

Some places I like are as follows...
Cities:
Taipei (capital city) & Hualien (oceanside)

Parks:
Toroko Gorge

Beaches:
Kenting & Pingtung

Here are some very useful links. They will have info and pictures. After you think about where you'd like to go, you can ask some more questions about specific areas.

http://www.taiwanfun.com/central/taichung/index.htm (A site for English people in Taiwan. Be sure to check out the links on the top of the page.)
http://tealit.com/ (A site for English people working in Taiwan.)
I hope you enjoy your stay here. I came and now I live here.
