Many of the "Best Answers" are profoundly stupid, but this is to be expected, since a lot of the "Questions" aren't really questions at all. They're just solicitations for agreement.

Not always.
There have been a few instances where I've answered a question then checked back later to see which answer was the "best" and its been a really dumb response. In those cases usually the asker isn't too bright either.
When it goes up for votes by other users it's usually the best answer.

Best answer choice depends on the mood of the questioner at the nick of the moment.... as variable as that..... and if put to vote, depends on how early one has answered... you may have no chance if you happen to be the 5th answerer or later... voters do not read more than 3-4 initial answers before making a choice.

Eh, some are, some aren't. I won't answer a question if I don't know anything about what someone is asking about. The ones I do answer, I try to answer to the best of my knowledge and hopefully am able to give them a little more insight on the subject.

No, they are usually just the answer that best supported the preconceptions and bigoted ides of the one who chose the answer.
Often the best answer is ignored in favor of the one that could help the least.

Not always. Some best answers are choosen just because they mostly match the asker's view.
