the belt that attaches to the motor that opens and closes the drive broke, so the drive keeps trying to "close" even though it is already closed. The motor makes an unpleasant and distracting noise. Do you know how to cut power to the drive?

You can choose to go the route of the first poster and do this thing manually OR you can opt to do the thing thru the driver onboard controls---
go to the control panel and open "Performance and Maintainace" when that window opens ---select--- System ---when the inset window appears ---select the tab---Hardware-- when that window opens ---select Device Manager--- now when this window opens you have your system laid out in front of you and listed---- click the + on the entry for your CD/DVD device and the driver entry will drop down for your options --- right click on the driver entry---a context menu will drop down and there will be an option to DISABLE-- tap this puppy and then O K and you should have an immediate cut to the server for this device until you get it repaired--- then you'll simply back track---- re-enable-- and you're back in business !!!

Hope this helps ----and Good Luck to you---Hardware can be a major pain---can't it ?? !!!!

IF it's in a Desktop, just remove the 4 pin molex power plug.

There should be 1 Red 1 Yellow and 2 Black wires at the back of the plug.

no need to cut the power. Just remove the casing of ur CPU and there will be a 3 or 4 cables connected with a white color slot to ur DVD drive. Remove the white color plug like thing attached to ur DVD drive.
Then the power supply will be disconnected to ur DVD drive.
Then u won't get that irritating noice anymore.

you can either just disconnect the power lead running into the back of the drive, or try going to add remove hardware and uninstall it.
