Could someone with experience with drugs (non-epidural) for pain management during childbirth tell me about their experience with it? Did it take the edge of the pain? What method of pain relief did you use?

I have three children. One with nothing. one with staydol and one with an epidural. The epidural was By far the easiest. I hated the staydol. and natural with Lamaze was not to bad. If your going to go natural then I would suggest going o Lamaze and Demerol if you have to have something.

i got Demerol it took the edge off...made me sleepy and a bit dopey feeling...and then it wore off after an half hour or so and they wont give you another shot so i took and epidural and it completely sold my birth experience i was no longer in control i couldn't feel to push i was hooked up to a buncha machines they screwed a fetal heart monitor to my babies head it sucked it also lessened the after birth rush and in honesty i can't remember much its very foggy ....for my next to i went all natural and did a water birth "natures epidural" its a miracle much better then Demerol XD well worth it ....... heres some tips that helped me
don't let yourself be scared..it triggers the fight or flight response and steels blood from your uterus and organs and puts it in your arms n legs which makes the pain even worse witch can make u more afraid...vicious cycle etc.

stay off your back move get on all fours, walk, squat do what feels natural the hospital will want to hook you up to monitors and leave you lying in bed tell them u are having an "active labor" !!!! flat on your back is the most painful position to be in

get a doula or have another women present who has gone through a natural childbirth

good luck

gas & air!!!
plus breathing and keeping active, try to move with the pain i find swaying my hips helps alot almost like a belly dance!!!
rocking back and forth also seems to help but the most important thing i have learnt is do not lay down on the bed till you really have to try to stay as up right as you can.
it really is important to try to stay relaxed because once you tense your whole body will tense, stay in control as much as you can, i tell my self during each pain "the next will be worse"so this 1 is not to bad and keep going like that thankfully i only use the gas & air to help for the last bit when the pain is very intense and the head is coming!!
good luck x x x x

well my sister got induced at 35 weeks +5 days as her blood pressure, anyway it was her first pregnancy and she only had the Drip or I.V (same thing) as they induced her, but other then that it was just the Happy Gas and Oxygen. it only lasted 3.5hrs (pretty quick for a first pregnancy huh; note: quick labors run in my family ALL OF THEM WERE DONE IN UNDER 4 HOURS)
