God i hate that shot, i was on it myself three years ago, i gained nearly thirty pounds in a summer! I was a healthy active women so it took me awhile to realize what the culprit was. I went to the doctor about it and he told me that the hormones in the shot slowed down the metablolism. You CAN lose the weight but a good idea is to find a safe way to up your metabolism, use something like vitamin B6 or a safe diet pill, this will help you out along with your diet and exercising. It took me two years and pregnancy weight gain of another forty-nine pounds before i got back down to the weight i was when i got on the shot. Hopefully it will be easier for you since you aren't pregnant. GOOD LUCK

Sigh...another victim of depo. I was on it for a lil over a year and had the same things happen. It took over a year to get my period again. We are actually part of the lucky group, alot of girls experiance bone pain and severe depression while on and long after quitting depo (something they don't tell you in the doctor's office). I'm still struggling with the weight problem. Seems depo not only put the pounds on but it slowed my metabolism as well. The best thing you can do is eat small healthy portions and exercise dillagently. You have a long road in front of you, best of luck! hope this helps.

I'm afraid weight gain is one of the most common side effects with depo injection. Unfortunately it can take quite some time to lose the weight - however if you maintain a healthy diet and exercise the weight will return to normal but it could take up to a year. This can be how long it can take for your hormones to return fully to normal (although some peoples return far quicker).
If you have changed to the contraceptive pill be aware this can also cause weight gain in susceptible people.

I think the key would be to eat balanced healthy diet with lots of fruit and veg, reducing your calorie intake to below your daily requirements can make you body reduce its natural requirements as with the famine effect.
Contact you gp to see if you can get free advice from a nutritional expert who may be able to come up with a dietary plan designed for you.
Also contact your local gym, the fitness instructors there will also be able to (probably at some expense) come up with a fitness and weight loss program designed around you.(contact your gp before commmencing any exercise regime).
If you need to snack, try eating raw celery, it takes more calories to ingest and digest than you actually take in.
You could also try a sauna as this is meant to boost your metabolism by upto 20%.
