We Americans love to categorize, stigmatize, and generalize everyone...to include atheists. Since each religion has a known and established system of values it makes for an easier understanding of a group of people. However, atheists do not have such a system and thus are liable to conduct themselves however they so choose. For Americans, as well as many other nationalities, this is scary since it is a fear of the unknown. Additionally, the American culture has been based on some form of Christianity and anything which deviates from the norm is threatening to the current system of "how things are done".
Anyway, it is sad really. I like diversity and it is boring to have people always agree with me. Thanks for remaining original.

it's because a lot of americans are close-minded. they don't like to accept a different idea, especially not ones that suggest god doesn't exist. their heads are so far into the bible, they can't see the actual truth and facts behind the stories. they think there must only be one god, when there can be hundreds and thousands of them from different religions. but they can't accept other's gods because they consider them bad. why? just why are they bad? i never understood that. christianity is one of the youngest religion there is. the story of the christian god is an adaption from other religions. where did the idea of god originate from? the oldest written records of a divine idea is from the sumerians. but their gods and goddesses were simply personifications of forces of nature. they didn't worship them. the stories of their gods are teachings to future generations of how to become better (for them, they learn how to become better farmers because most of their myths were nature myths).
when the babylonians took over, they introduced the concept of good and evil and male dominance. many cultures adopted their concepts, and that's how we get today's culture of good and evil, concept of having sins, and women always being under men.
not believing in a god does not make u untrustworthy. just because we don't believe in a god, doesn't mean we don't have morals. i agree with u 100% for i also look at scientific proves and ancient stories. i'm still continuing on to distance myself from the whole religion concept since i really don't believe in divine beings.
i hope this helped u a little. but that's just what my thoughts were.

Because a lot of peoples values are built upon religion and someone who doesn't believe in god or a creator can be seen as threatening that in which they believe.
Your right and wrong may not be someone elses right and wrong thats the problem.

you cant be trusted because only god knows what other stupid opinions you may come up with. Its unfortunate for you that you have moved yourself so far from the will of god and you may die not knowing what your purpose is, its sad really

Because Christians (and religious people in general) are dumb ***** who are terrified of people that actually think for themselves instead of being spoonfed propaganda by a church.
