I'm moving there soon, hopefully with a friend or two. Where would be the least expensive place to live? Trying to start a band, but I don't want to be homeless.

The terms "cheap place to live", and "California" do not go together. The impression about how glamorous it is to live in California that you see on television, and in the movies is totally different than the reality of living here. It is extremely crowded, expensive, and grossly over regulated.

The straight answer to your question is that California is expensive because the climate is good and it is a nice place to live. The urban areas are crowded just like any big city, but there are lots of little towns that aren't crowded (I live in one). People wouldn't pay the high prices to live here unless it was a good place to live.
People also assume all of California is like L.A. L.A. is just one part of a very big state.
The cheapest places tend to be inland, away from the beach and a long commute from any of the major urban areas. If you are trying to start a band and want to be near one of the bigger cities, you will be paying high rent no matter what.

On the street selling crack rock. Seriously though, California is way more expensive than neighboring states. Try Oregon, Nevada, or New Mexico for cheap real estate. Or you could always go to Mexico.

Dude, don't come to California because this state tends to suck...(in my opinion) There is a property tax a sales tax and a state tax. They charge you for everything so unless you are a baller (and even then not so much) it is expensive to live here.
