Is it so they don't damage the lady parts if they slip? Or is it her weight bending the bar down?

This is one of life's great mysteries that has been nagging me since I was a kid.

So if the bike was designed like that for women so that they wouldn’t have to be un-lady like, then I guess its irrelevant today.

It's to air out her Hoo-Hahh! I once saw a lady riding her bike past my house and it sounded like a Harley. It didn't take long to realize that she was wearing a tennis skirt and going al' naturale like Britney Spears.

Them lips flapping in the breeze sounded like a 1968 Pan Head!

The skirt part is true.. but also ladies have a habit of getting onto a bike by stepping over the middle bar. Where as guys tend to lift a leg over the rear tire like getting on a horse. Also the straight bar is stronger and can support more weight then the dipping bar.

I work for a downhill bike tour company :)

I have often wondered that myself...thats a good question. I am a female, and I had a female friend that got "hurt" very badly by "slipping" on her brothers bike, so that I get....but damn a hard blast of air and a male is in pain, so why not dip the male bike too? I dont know...like I said good question.

For the skirt. If you lift your leg over the back of a bike wearing a skirt...not so easy without showing too much!

It started because in early 1900 it was un seemly for a lady or girl to lift her leg in a provocative way!
Survived to this day!

why is it a married woman's bicycle specifically? I am sure a single girl can have a main support bar that dips also.

when bikes first came out, all girls wore dresses. this made bike riding with a dress easier.
