The Indian caste system is gradually relaxing, especially in metropolitan and other major urban areas, due to the penetration of higher education, co-existence of all communities and lesser knowledge about caste system due to alienation with rural roots of people. But in the countryside and small towns, this system is still very rigid. However, the total elimination of caste system seems distant, if ever possible, due to caste politics.
The Government of India has officially documented castes and subcastes, primarily to determine those deserving reservation (positive discrimination in education and jobs) through the census. The Indian reservation system relies entirely on quotas. The Government lists consist of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes:

Yes unfortunately. All of us know that all people are same. There were many reasons for formation of cast system.
But nowadays in India ,previouly lower cast people are favoured by govt.Dont misunderstand me.But,it is a fact that govt. is bias towards them.So ,they always keep on trying to point, that this person is of this cast, thats why he got admission in good college or anythingthough they have less marks. That of course makes others to think about cast systems.

Thanks to the government, yes.
The caste system is fading away in most places, though it is more prevalent in rural areas.
But due to caste politics, the issue is being raised again.
It makes no difference among educated people until the problem of reservation arises and people who get anything by hard work and merit naturally resent 'SC's who get benefits for no logical reason.
With regard to reservations, the government should stop vote-bank politics, and help provide quality education for ECONOMICALLY backward people.

yes, very much
maybe not in the professional front, but definitely in other situations, and in politics
there is still the stigma of "lower caste" people being forced to perform manual labour as well as being made to clean up human waste [source: THE WEEK]. and caste is STILL more imp than true love when it come 2 marriage. don't we tell our children "u can find any good boy/girl urself, as long as he/she is not from another/lower caste/religion?"
and as for the political front... let me not go there.
CBSE Class 10 textbook even says "Caste is losing its ground as a social menace, but it is now becoming more of a political tool". [Chapter: Challenges of Communalism and Casteism]
