Because in the West unhappy couples have the freedom to go on with their lives. In many Eastern countries there is a huge social stigma against divorce, and so instead couples live out their lives in misery. Obviously, I think the Western system is better. It doesn't do anyone, including the children, good to keep warring families together.

you are talking about cultural differences, which are huge between east and west. mainly in religion, and survival. also look at the exchange rates.....western cultures are driven by money, eastern(as I've seen) are driven by tradition, belief systems are taken more serious.
That's what I've observed anyway, hope that helps.

Women are at work now changes the landscape some.
But also selfishness no one want to explore how to rebuild the marriage just say goodbye, and nice knowing you, and onto the next guy or lady.

because american women can make choices for their lives, not having to cowtow to the mens wishes.
