Great Britain still retains her position as the head of the Commonwealth. Why would she need world power when she has the respect of all Commonwealth nations to which she gave her laws, customs, Westminister system of government and democracy.

When Britain had her Empire, she was a commerical power with her traders spreading across the globe. The Industrial Revolution and changes to society allowed British commerce to scower the world for resources - British traders such as the East India Company made alot of money and brought prestige to Britain. In order to defend her commerce, Britain required a powerful navy.

But now Britain is focused on Europe and the EEC - she has no need for a navy.

However, Britain still plays an active part in global security and international relations. Britain is still a member of the Five Power Defence Arrangement in Pacific and still actively plays a part in regional problems such as Iraq and Afghanistan. But thats all she can afford to do now.

Empires cost money and alot of responsibility. Money and resources that Britain simply does not have.

Besides, Britain has already tried to revive her Empire. She realised just how vulnerable her position was over the Suez Canal issue. No country, not even the United States, was willing to be seen to be supporting neo-colonialism. Even British involvement in the far-flung distant Falkland Islands was seen by some as absolutely pointless.

Another final point - Britain's glory days have centred around her monarchy. In the days of Victoria, the monarchy had prestige and respect. Once Queen Elizabeth II is dead, respect for the monarchy will further wane. I cant see the monarchy lasting long after the reign of Charles III or William V.

Dont worry mate - as an aussie i will stand there and raise the Union Jack and salute my portrait of our good Queen bessy every morning! God Save the Queen!

there are no such.. all people are equal. we have seen in history that in the end, no matter how glorious the empire, they all collapse. instead of thinking which empire, we should be thinking for humanity.
