I was security man for ten years, and am currently a block watch captain in my neighborhood. In my opinion, a spare under the mat won't make a lot of difference. A burglar is only going to spend so much time looking for a spare that he doesn't know the location of, and if he's smart, he won't use the front door as a point of entry. He'll go through the back, or a side door, or if he has to, he'll break a window. Strangely, though, I have heard of a few bold efforts. These are quite rare. Usually a result of negligence on the part of the victim, i.e. leaving a garage door wide open, not locking exterior doors, etc.
So, in answer to your question, I doubt it's that much more common. If you're going to have a spare, though, don't pick the welcome mat, that's the easiest place to look. I used to have a combination locking key box buried about six inches underground, hidden under a football sized boulder, in the backyard.

I don't know the statistics on that, but it seems the first place to look for a spare key would be under the mat, or on the door ledge, which would make it easy for people to get inside.

Maybe by just a little, but I think most burglars target their houses ahead of time and break in either way. I doubt many burlgars go around a neighborhood and look under every mat until they find a key, but it still isn't a smart place to leave one.

No the crooks use the window now-a-days as opposed to the front door. They like the confused look of the people they're robbing
