It really depends on what brand of laptop you have. Some of the brands have propietary drives, and are not sold widely. This means that you will have to get them "changed" or "upgraded" through the manufacturer leaving you responsible not only for the price of the drive but the labor. (say $300 for Sony, Hp, etc.) Other laptop manufacturers such as dell and toshiba sell non-propietary drives that are usually made to be swappable. This means all you have to do is pop your drive out (usually with a pop of a button located on the drive (or under your laptop) and replace it with the new drive. If you find a good deal online you can get a DVD-RW for these for ~$100.

Now it is going to in basic terms study records CD's. i ended up procuring an exterior DVD/RW. i think of they are designed to fail merely after their guarantee has run out.

you could buy one to fit in but with laptops it will be expensive & fitting it internally int a laptop isn't as easy as fitting it into a PC as theres more crammed inside.

It would be cheaper and easier to buy an external one which will just plug into the back of your laptop, this also reduces unnccesary power drain (your battery will last longer).
