Yes and No, Most Malaysians are friendly, especially towards tourists and will go out of their way for a tourist. This year 2007 being Visit Malaysia Year is a good year to visit as activities are planned, for those who like urban tourism ie activities in towns, cities. All depends on where you are visiting. However i must say there are some places (not in malaysia) not a friendly.

Multiculturalism has not only made Malaysia a gastronomical paradise, it has also made Malaysia home to hundreds of colourful festivals. It's no wonder that we love celebrating and socialising. As a people, Malaysians are very laid back, warm and friendly.

Geographically, Malaysia is as diverse as its culture. There are two parts to the country, 11 states in the peninsula of Malaysia and two states on the northern part of Borneo. Cool hideaways are found in the highlands that roll down to warm, sandy beaches and rich, humid mangroves.

One of Malaysia's key attractions is its extreme contrasts. Towering skyscrapers look down upon wooden houses built on stilts, and five-star hotels sit several metres away from ancient reefs.

For the perfect holiday full of surprises, eclectic cultures and natural wonders, the time is now, the place is Malaysia.

Hmm.. I am a local malaysian. U really want to know how friendly malaysian is towards foreigners? Read this story:
I was at a lounge called 'conservatory' at the Meridien Sentral. It took the waitress an hour to offer me the drink menu. Throughout the night she was too busy to even blink at my friends and i as she was too busy chatting with a wrinkly old white man at the bar. That is how friendly a local can be. This a typical local service staff attitude, a huge problem for hotels offering friendly 5 star service.

Ahaha.. should i give tips to these type of locals? I dont think so... She should not stereotype people that way. Local do give good tips as well.

AQ, I beg to differ... they seem to become friendlier the longer I stay here, really! I feel accepted, family.

Maybe I have to add that I live in Sabah, in the countryside...

But Malysia is definitively tourist/tourism friendly, it is in the nature of virtually all Malaysians out of this huge ethnic patchwork that makes up Malaysia's population. Malaysia, on the other hand, is not really equipped for the handicapped travellers... but again, the local population can make up in a big way for this, I have seen it several times (I work in tourism...).
