Allot of antivirus programs now have active scan, or live scan, scanning all running programs for viruses, if your antivirus software has this capability then once a week is good to do a complete scan. Otherwise daily scans will help prevent a virus from spreading and corrupting more files.....

I run Linux , so never need anti-virus software - none of the Windows viruses affect it!
Back in the dark days when I was using XP , I used to update every time I went on the net , before I visited any sites.
That's about the best you can do and hope you stay safe - eventually something will get through , so make sure you do regular backups of valuable data and programs so you have them to reinstall after your next reformat and install.
Other than that , give Linux a go , just as easy to use as Windows and much better - no activation , no viruses , no trojans , and virtually all software is FREE.
Worth considering........

If you are not experiencing any problems, just continue to keep it updated, and run a scan once a week.
