The easiest way to do this is to reverse it. Think 'I owe someone $5.40 and I just earned $9.70.'
If I pay my debt:
9.70-5.40 = 4.30 left
Your answer is 4.3.
You could also use a number line. Start at 0.
Now move 5.4 places to the left (negative), then move 9.7 spaces to the right from the -5.4 position. You will get the same answer.

In this case it is easier to switch the positions of each number and make it 9.7-5.4 ( make sure you keep the sign the same)
