A.D. stands for Anno Domini (Latin : "In the year of (Our) Lord" defines an epoch(instant chosen as the origin of a particular time scale) based on the traditionally reckoned year of the conception or birth of Jesus of Nazareth.
Although scholars generally believe that Christ was born some years before A.D. 1, the historical evidence is too sketchy to allow a definitive dating.

The Anno Domini system was developed by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus (born in Scythia Minor) in Rome in 525.

Today, AD is often mistaken for meaning "after death (of Jesus)". If this were true, however, there would then be a 33-year gap in the calendar, as Jesus died at 33 years of age.

What's all this "Anno Dimini"? I thought A.D. stood for "after death" meaning after the death of Christ. Ofcourse, these days it's called A.C.E. (after Christian era).

I think it's short for "ano domieni" or something like that and it's latin. I believe it means "The year of our Lord."

I'm not aware of when it started.
