Do you think the Irish solders who fought for Mexico against the US, are consider traitors, and why?

The Irish solders fought for Mexico against the United States in 1948. They were called, "The San Patricios". They imigrate to Mexico to have freedom because of the bad treatment that their own american solders gave them.

Traitors to whom? Was Mexico also at war with Ireland at the time?
