I am leaving Japan after a week long vacation. Has anyone ever been to Japan? I didn't have to get a Visa because I am only here for a week. They stapled this paper in my passport next to the stamp they put on it. What do they do with that paper when I leave? do you have to go through a bunch of hassle and talk with people at a computer terminal when your leaving the country like you do when you enter? Do they scan that paper they stapled in your passport, or do they just tear it out when you leave? I got hassles and they had to call my friend when I came in to the country because I have an old criminal record (bad checks over four years ago) in the states. Will I get messed with and hassled about that again going out? My friends say I won't that live here, they say they just tear that paper out they stapled in your passport and leave. that's it. Is that true? I just want to know what to expect.
thanks.

The thing you have to realize is typically what you did in the 'States stays in the 'States. A criminal record due to a few bad checks is maintained at the state level, not federal. So unless you've done something to rouse the attention of the FBI or Interpol, Japanese immigration won't care about someone's past such as yourself. Just don't mention and you assuredly won't have any problems.

The little paper is one of the ways they check to make sure that you did not overstay your visa. In your case, after one week that will not be a problem. Just get in the line show your passport and that is it. No problems or hassle.

I've never had any problems leaving Japan...(but I haven't had problems going in, either). They do have the lines where you have to show your passport to the customs/immigration agents, they enter your info into the computer, and then chances are you'll be free to go. Hopefully they cleared everything up when they let you in, so there shouldn't be any problems leaving. If I were you, though, I'd get to the airport early, just in case.

Most of the time they will just tear the paper out unless you buy something that is tax-exempt. For example if you buy camera in Yodobashi and you show them the passport, you'll get VAT exemption and the shop will mark this in that paper for the custom when you leave the country.

Yes, as you exit, they just take the paper back. Don't offer to tell them about your past... they won't ask anyway.

I thot you were going to ask what you can do at the airport.... I bought dried octopus and had a snack.

i think that they just tear that paper off and you'll be sitting on your butt until your flight comes. sounds much better than getting hassled huh?
