web site? there's probably a few...
Star Trek original pilot was a flop. (The cage)
After a while, a remake of the pilot, using a large portion of the original was made. This went over somewhat better due to the better ship's captain. (Kirk/Shatner)
The series was aired in poor time slots and was allowed to struggle for a few years. Then it died.
It went on as a cheap re-run in a better time slot and was "discovered" by the public. It was new (becuase it had virtually been unseen in the bad slots) and had a sort of space-cowboy feel with some modern racial equality showing (a rather novel concept in TV for the time even when it was first re-released in re-runs)
The Appollo program was underway at the same time as the Star Trek series was in its initial re-runs... So it was "timely" ... This is the Future and we are making it happen!"
The "data tapes on Star Trek were the inspiration for the Cassete tape of the 60's and 70's (still used somewhat today) Also there was a bit of influence of them in the design of the more modern 3.5 inch floppy disk. There are several "technologies" theorized to make Star Trek work that have been put into actual use today.
People begged for YEARS for additional episodes... we got the Star Trek movies.
The movies were poplular and made lots of money.
The Star Trek Next Generation series "spin-off" was developed. appx 80 years in the future compared to the original series time setting.
That was a big hit... more spin-offs... more moies.. more profits......
Its really all about the profits...

I can't think of a website, but a book called, "The Making of Star Trek" is both enjoyable and informative. I don't know if it's still in print, but Amazon should be able to locate a copy for you.

The answer is at your fingertips. I don't know how true it is... but I've often heard that Internet was created... because of Star Trek. Seems logical, but... I digress.
I don't think the answer you are looking for is on the internet but there are many still in print non-fiction books on the creation, deveopment, and facination with the franchise.
