i work really hard all the time. the other day someone asked me if I won the lottery and didn't have to work anymore, what would i do. wow, the question blew me away because all this time, i kept thinking about making money, saving money, etc. etc. so besides our day to day existence, what is the point of life?

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

I recently came to a realisation about this subject. The point to life is the connection and interactions that we have with others, beyond this nothing else matters.

Let me explain, food, drink, mating, doing good work for good money, spending money, etc. all of these things will satisfy us but not for long. If you have watched the movie 'Pirates of the Caribbean' the people who get stuck in this cycle are like the cursed pirates on the black pearl, nothing will satisfy for long. They need more and more, greater and greater, until finally they have all that they can but still have nothing because they cannot use it.

On the other hand if you look at the classic 'A Christmas carol' the crochets are happy with very little. They don't have everything that their heart could desire but hey have enough and that is good enough for them.

While these are two fictional stories the basis of them is rooted deeply in fact. The point to life is not how much you have but how many people you have to share it with, how many you like and love and how many like and love you. It is like the old adage, the poor man is as rich as a king if he is loved.

Hope this helps.

the point of life is not to live as an individual person because it is so much bigger than that. We (the human race) have to live life together as a single life form and be able the live in harmony with the earth and every other living thing
As it is now we are more of a disease or plaque that just depletes, kills and destroys every thing around us then move on without putting any thing back into the cycle.
If you think about it the earth and every thing else would be just fine for ever without humans every thing else in the world is need for the earth to exist properly

Lives don't have points; pencils have points.
Oh, you mean the OTHER kind of point.
Ths point of life is to find yourself a point of life.
Some guys build business empires, some help people one at a time, others provide services, from plumbing to haircuts to insurance. As you accumulate experience in life, you'll find out the kinds of careers that fulfill you. Pick one.
___That's a start. The big questions will come on their own, at the right time, and you can deal with them then. But you'll do a better job with them after you accumulate life experience.

Take clothing or blankets to a homeless shelter. Serve food at Thanksgiving to those who are without. Give a day to a friend on a home project. Play games with your nieces or nephews. Give of yourself. It takes time, but no money. The point of life is to give. That's when you receive.

It's like taking a trip and observing/enjoying all the sightseeing along the way. When you get there, you are there, and there wouldn't be as much sightseeing, so you'd want to go somewhere else after a while,...and cycle might repeat itself.

To live, love, and enjoy your time here. It's not about money, it's about your experiences.
