It's a simple concept, that defense wins ballgames. You stop your opponents from scoring and you can get away with scoring low yourself as long as you outscore your opponents. Especially in the NBA, considering most teams all but abandon any sort of defense. You look at the Pistons, Spurs, and Heat; they won with their defense as much as their offense.

Defense is about way more than just keeping the other team from scoring. It helps the offense get easier transition points. Steals lead to easy high percentage shots. It is a lot easier to score when on a 3vs2 or 2vs1 break. In the same way the best defense is a good offense. Low turnovers and plenty of made baskets allow the defense time to set up and get in position.

As stated here already, defense not only can limit the opponents' scoring, but can create turnovers that lead to easy fastbreak points. Good defense can also disrupt the other team's offense enough that offense can be easier.

Usually when a coach says that, he means points off of turnovers from easy baskets or points in transition after a turnover. Big momentum shifts when that happens can really disrupt the other team and frustrate them. When you play great defense, it doesn't really matter if your team is having an off shooting night. You can't always shoot well. Statistically, it just doesn't happen. But great defense takes effort, which you can always give when you step on the floor.
