i know that american idol is pretty much a popularity contest and I know that there are some americans who actually vote based on singing talent, but pretty soon the american idols will look great, but sing like crap. pretty soon they won't have to go on stage and sing, they'll just have to walk across the stage, look pretty, and hope that people will vote for them based on their appearance. and that's all you'll have to do to become the next american idol. it's happening already, they just make them sing so they can keep calling it a "singing competition".

Look at the pop charts. Do you see anything different than you just described?

i agree with you to some extent but i don't think american idol is just a mere popularity contest and that they are just making them sing for the sake of being called a singing contest. i am not a fan of that show at all but i have seen a few episodes in the past and the people that actually win, i don't think they are actually the best but they can sing. futhermore. i think the judges also have a say on that so it's not purely popularity. and besides, the people who win are the people whom the viewers would love based on looks and of course talent because who would want a singer who sings crap? you may ask about william hung... well i think he is just a fad. people adored him those times but it's not like they are serious about him or anything....

i agree and this season seems to be the worst! Simon isn't even commenting on weight issues anymore...why all of a sudden does he think it's ok to be "bigger"? I personally think a "bigger" person should win the title for others to look up to since they're aren't many really good honest role models left and everyone is obsessed with being a size 0 and I don't think he should have ever comment ted on weight but that used to be something that he always mentioned so why not now? I guess he's figured out like the rest of us that the judges really can't sway the votes anymore and AI has lost all it's singing cred... :o(

as for what "mommytoo" said, Diana was not from Hawaii, Jasmine and camille were, ( I lived there during that time), and yes the whole state was voting for them even though they weren't that good...

I tdoes make you wonder after the last 2 weeks. The young kid who advanced both weeks is obviously not as good as some who were booted. He obviously has been getting the mini mart vote. But seriously, the best way to improve the results is to have people vote as to who they want eliminated. This would work but I think the show likes the controversy.

your probably right. its headed in that direction. just look at survivor's first season (some pretty crusty characters) and the last season (everyones pretty hot). on idol they will still have to sing well, maybe they just throw more hot people in that they know will never win, but are there for looks mainly. heck even on that "deal or no deal" show to get on you have to submit a video tape of yourself and your "cheering section". Im not against hot people i just don't want it shoved in my face when the show is really about something else.

It's about singing talent as well as stage presence. The one who has the most is the one who appeals to the audience, so in a way the answer is yes.

i think what you are talking about is americas next top model. And i guess that wouldn't be too big a stretch considering simon also wanted to judge contestants on looks. I think that ultimately the best singer wins ruben taylor and fantasia werent exactly models and they still won.

for me it IS a singing competition. There is a girl on there from Naperville, which is where I'm from, but I don't vote for her b/c she is from my town, I vote for ther person or people who I think are the best singers\performers.

I think back to diana degarmo (sp?) and I think the entire population of Hawaii was voting for her JUST b/c she was hawaiian. She CERTAINLY wasn't the best singer that season, but she made it all the way to second place.

If it were, there wouldn't be the new looks every week and the stylists trying to improve everyone. I respect Chris S. for not giving in to it. If he cuts his 'fro I'll never watch Idol again!
