I started my 36 week of pregnancy yesterday and and had regular contractions that became more intense and were 4 minutes apart. At hospital and they gave me 2 bags of fluids and eventuallly a shot of terbutaline. My cervix was closed...very closed the nurse said. She said I was therefore not in labor/ My contractions slowed down and I could barely feel them, I was then sent home. all day and evening I have had sporadic contractions, some I can feel strongly others are very weak..but none like last night. I feel I did not get a good explanation as to why this happened and what happens next. They sent me home on no meds becase they said I was almost full term, but they said they would like the baby to stay in for a little while longer. My due date is april 14th......
Can anyone make me understand what is happening a little better? Dies this mean the baby will be here soon? could I go till my due date or even past? Will I have these contractions up until the baby is born? (Baby #2)

Terbutaline To Treat Preterm Labor

you where having contraction but the Dr decided to stop them so that the baby will stay in longer and have more time to develop

here is a link explaining what it is and what are the side effects

next time make sure you talk to your Dr before he gives you anything and do not leave the hospital with out an explanation

Questions To Discuss With Your Doctor
Am I really experiencing preterm labor (dilated and effaced cervix)?

What dosage of terbutaline will I be taking?

What form of terbutaline will I take?

Do you prescribe the terbutaline pump and under what conditions?

How long will I take terbutaline?

At what gestational age do you think the risks outweigh the benefits of taking terbutaline?

How will you monitor my health while I'm on terbutaline and how often?

What happens if I experience adverse side effects?

What's your position on combining preterm labor drugs?

What's your position on the use of corticosteroids (drugs to mature the baby or babies' lungs)?

Are there any non-drug alternatives to terbutaline?

Sorry to be indefinite - but all things in pregnancy tend to be that. You can deliver soon or after your due date or right on time. Sometimes, dehydration brings on early contractions that are not true labor but could lead to early labor if your water breaks or your cervix does dilate. Almost anything could cause early contractions - but the medication will help stop the contractions until the right time. When you go off the meds you might go right into labor or not. Everything about a pregnancy is so wait and see - it was always like that for me 3 times.

okay when i was preg. the same thing happened to me. your baby was just trying to come a little early is all and the doctors decided that they wanted to keep baby inside a little longer. the bags of fluids and the shot stops contractions and tightens the cervix to prevent the baby from coming out or your water from breaking. since your cervix was closed this means that your body/baby was having a reaction to either something you ate, something physical you did, or you went into false labor. much like its name you feel like your cervix is dialaiting and you are going to have your baby but your really not and everything is going to be fine. yes, this probably means that you will have your child a little ahead of time or right at your due date but you shouldn't go past at all. but really there is nothing to worry about unless you get really bad pains then you should go to the doctor imm. the reason you didn't get any meds on your way home was b/c since your full term there really isn't any need for them to stop labor, nothing would be wrong with having the baby a little early. Doc. prefer to go till your due date but you don't have to once you are tech. "full term". now if you were say 7mon. then they would have put you on full bed rest and given you med. to stop the contractions and keep the baby in longer. but since you're at 36weeks you don't need that med. you'll probably have mild to week contractions up until the baby is born but its nothing to worry about unless they get really painful and uncontrollable. GOOD LUCK!!!

My due date is April 15th...and the same ting pertty much happened to me Sunday night. I was having contractions all day and finally decided at 11pm to go to the hospital. and thankfully I did. I was 1cm dialated and my contractions were 2 minutes apart and very strong. They gave me 4 shots of turburtaline (the max dosage) and that stopped the contractions. Although last night I started having back contractions and they were moving to the front. I decided to use heat on my back and lay down and if they got worse I'd go to the hospital. but luckily, I'm ok now. The dr. told me that even though i'm dialated and was having contractions, it doesn't mean the baby is coming soon. Make sure to keep your self hydrated...I didn't drink enough water and that's what brought mine on. So make sure you drink TONS of water. Good luck with your pregnancy!

i just gave birth to baby #4 a month ago (feb 10) and after 3 simple pregnancys and very easy deliverys (less than 6 hours each)...i was having regular contractions 2-3 days a week (less than 5 mins apart) starting at 32 weeks......started dilating at 34.....at 35 i was 3 cm.....didnt deliver till 39 weeks after 18 hours of contractions. so in essence the simple answer i can give is you have to wait and see.
